Tips for this recipe:

  • Boil the jicama first - Seriously, do not skip this step! Boil the jicama first, which will help cook them before you bake them.

  • Broil at the end for some extra crisp - Baking these at a high heat helps to crisp up the jicama fries, but you can always broil them at the end for a few minutes too. Alternatively, you can make air fryer jicama fries. I haven’t tested the timing out on this so you would need to use your own judgment.

  • These can be diced too - if you prefer a “breakfast potato” style, you can dice these instead of making them into a traditional fry style.

  • Baking times can vary - if these jicama fries aren’t done after an hour you will need to bake them a bit longer. Be sure to continue checking every few minutes.

CRISPY LOW CARB JICAMA FRIES

Prep: 10 min Cook time: 1 hour Total time: 1 hr 10 min Yield: 4 servings
Low Carb, Paleo - inLifeandLittles.com

INGREDIENTS:

1 lb jicama (I buy pre-sliced from Trader Joes)
3 Tbsp butter or oil
1 tsp chili powder
½ tsp sea salt + additional to taste
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
Dash of paprika
Dash of black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

  2. Peel and slice jicama into french fry shapes. I like buying pre-sliced jicama from Trader Joes, which lets me bypass this step! I do still recommend that you check to make sure the slices are the size of fries you want.

  3. Bring jicama slices to boil in a pot on the stove. Allow to boil for 15 minutes, then remove and pat dry.

  4. Melt your butter/oil. Then mix in the seasonings.

  5. Toss jicama in seasoning mix until they are evenly coated.

  6. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake for 40 minutes, flipping halfway through.

  7. Remove from the oven when crisped to your liking.  Let jicama fries cool briefly before serving.
